| Q: | What equipment do you use? |
| A: | I use Canon 5D Mark II with a 50mm 1.2 L series lens.
Originally I planned to use a large format (and/or medium format) camera, but that quickly changed when I realized the short attention span of many of these dogs. I did a few test shoots with the large format (4x5 field camera) and medium format cameras (Rolliecord Twin Lens). I would have everything ready to go, focused and primed, but the dog would be photographically uncooperative. This lead me to the realization that I needed to work with the dog, instead of getting the dog to work with me. The DSLR makes that very easy. |
| Q: | Do you ever use Photoshop to compose the images? |
| A: | Yes. I do use Photoshop. For example, the dogs are on leashes, and I remove the collar and leash in the editing
stage.
My goal is to make these images look like what the dog might dream about (e.g., running free, jumping, rolling, and
being in an unobstructed environment).
However, the final photos are very close to the original unedited images. Occasionally, I may add a cape, if it is appropriate. |
| Q: | How do you choose the dogs? |
| A: | The shelter chooses the dogs for me. Since they know the dogs best, they know which dogs are healthy, and in most need of a walk. Sometimes they do give me a choice. In those cases, I go by the date and choose the dog that has been there the longest. |
| Q: | How many Landfill Dogs have found homes? |
| A: | This number is constantly changing.
As of November 21, 2014, 108 of the 127 dogs I have photographed have left the shelter and gone to permanent homes or rescue groups. 11 dogs have been euthanized. 8 dogs are still waiting for homes. Some of these dogs are currently in foster homes. |
| Q: | Are these adoptions due to your photographs? |
| A: | As much as I would like to take credit for these statistics, there are many people involved in promoting these
animals. Specifically, the shelter staff, volunteers and foster families are responsible for these amazing numbers.
They have a Herculean task of caring for over 350 animals everyday. What is more, the shelter takes in approximately
35 new animals EVERY day.
Landfill Dogs just focuses on one dog each week. Although I am happy to contribute, the shelter staff and volunteers deserve the credit. Their dedication, compassion, and commitment to seeing these animals safe and healthy is nothing short of awe inspiring amazement. Please join us in expressing our gratitude. |
